Scholarship — Pride
I am a proud member of the Seminole Nation.
When I first came to Florida State University, I was an excited and eager Chemical Engineering major. Fresh from high school, knowing no one so far away from home I began to get depressed and started resenting my impersonal 300 plus student classes. Sinking further into depression, to attempt to cheer myself up I decided to take REL3936, Fantasy Literature: Harry Potter; which dealt with the religion in several popular book series (i.e. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings). I was happy going to this class and began to make friends in my smaller more intimate class. This prompted me to change my major to Humanities (with a focus in religion), these classes were wonderful. They are small enough so everybody knows everyone else but large enough for the conversation to remain lively with opinions. The class sizes at FSU allowed me to make more friends than I thought possible my freshman year, and I am really glad that had been the case.
I have made friends for life and it is these friends that I attribute my current successes to. They brought me out of my shell and introduced me to the best thing that FSU has to offer, Football. Seminole country football season is the absolute best! Fans take over the entire downtown area, if you are not attending the game you may as well stay home because you are not going anywhere any time soon. Solo cups line the streets everywhere after one of our little games; it gives a whole new meaning to Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup.” Which I have heard numerous visitors singing on their way to the stadium, except they were not college students but older adults. FSU football games bring everyone together – everyone is a Nole, even if it is only for a few hours.
Through its unique blend of educational and social opportunities, FSU is the best school to grow and find out who you truly are at. Had I not come to FSU I am positive I would not have made it to my senior year but with the help of my friends that is no longer a fear I have.
GO NOLES!
